Parametric Study on the Applicability of AASHTO LRFD for Simply Supported Reinforced Concrete Skewed Slab Bridges

Simplified code provisions can be used for the analysis and design of straight slab bridges. However, several studies question appropriateness simplified procedures skewed geometries. This paper provides practical insights to designer regarding effects skewness in reinforced concrete bridges by evaluating how more refined impact magnitudes resulting reinforcement layouts. The methods this study are analytical numerical case studies. Eighty with varying lengths, widths, skew angles subjected AASHTO HL-93 loading. Then, governing moments shear forces determined using LRFD hand calculations, linear finite element (LFEA). Afterwards, is designed according provisions. From these studies, it found through LFEA that increasing result decreasing amounts longitudinal transverse flexural reinforcement. Comparing layouts LRFD-based calculations LFEA, we find reduces total weight steel needed. Moreover, as increases, captures increased at obtuse corner does not. In conclusion, preferable instead based on cost reduction safety terms resistance corners.
